The national flag carrier, Vietnam Airlines, has been the first airlines in Vietnam, in coordination with the International Air Transport Association, will begin piloting the IATA Travel Pass (a digital health mobile app) on 1 June 2021.

This project  is considered the key to open up the border, facilitating passengers’ travel between countries, and meeting all entry requirements of authorities and governments of countries.

IATA Travel Pass is a mobile app developed by the International Air Transport Association in order to provide governments across the globe with accurate data about the COVID-19 health status of arriving passengers and allow for coronavirus travel requirements to be more easily met.

It is now available in the iOS and Android stores. For travelers, this mobile app is free of charge to download and use.

The IATA Travel Pass provides:

  • Governments with the means to verify the authenticity of tests or vaccinations and the identity of those presenting their certificates.
  • Airlines with the ability to provide accurate information to their passengers on test requirements and verify that a passenger meets the requirements for travel.
  • Laboratories with the means to issue certificates to passengers that will be recognized by governments
  • Travelers with accurate information on test requirements, where they can get tested or vaccinated, and the means to securely convey the results/certificates to airlines and border authorities

The IATA Travel Pass is being piloted by more than 30 airlines worldwide, including five-star airlines such as Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways, and three countries have officially allowed the use of this app for entry (Singapore, Panama and Estonia).

Implementing this mechanism could accelerate the reopening of regular international flights to Vietnam and facilitate international travel during the pandemic.
